Finally, the XFL has released their team names! XFL fans have been waiting months to get the names of their favorite teams and now they are here.
LA WILDCATS HOUSTON ROUGHKNECKS DC DEFENDERS SEATTLE DRAGONS ST.LOUIS BATTLEHAWKS NY GUARDIANS DALLAS RENEGADES TAMPABAY VIPERS Okay, let's rank the names. First, off the absolute worse name of them all is the LA Wildcats. Why the hell would you name a team in LA, the Wildcats? There is nothing about LA that screams Wildcats. I almost like the XFL just got lazy or even ran out of names and just said all screw it, call them the Wildcats. Final grade on team name is an F. The second worse team name is the Tampa Bay Vipers. I just don't get it. I feel they could have been a little more creative. There is nothing terribly wrong with the team name Vipers but I feel they could have named the team after something more related to the State of Florida. Final grade on the team name is a C-. The DC Defenders is one that a lot of people have crapped on but I have to admit the name kind of makes sense. DC being the Nations Capitol and by Washington representing the great military power of the United States, Defenders actually fits. This is a name people will probably learn to like as time goes on. Final grade on the name is a B. Dallas Renegades is one I like very much. Hell, it's Texas. Texas is supposed to be badass. Not much to say about it but it's a great name that compliments the city of Dallas. Final grade on the team name is an A. St. Louis Battle Hawks is so good and so on point. Battle Hawks sounds good and it is perfect in the sense that it says we are warriors but it is not too over the top. Final grade on the team name is an A. Seattle Dragons is kind of lame for a team name. It falls into that lazy creator category. Dragons is a name that is often used by minor leagues and creat-a-teams in video games. It's not the worst but definitely could have been something more appealing. Final grade on the team name is a D. Houston Roughknecks is decent. I like that the name is not generic like the Dragons is. I get the concept of Texas being a tough guy state. All in all it is creative and feels legit at the same time. Final grade on the team name is a C. Last, it's the NY Guardians. I thought the name was stupid at first and then I had time to think about it. New York is Gotham City and New York is where a lot of superheroes stories are based. The XFL's trailer for the Guardians is what really sold me on the name. Final on the team name is a B+. The XFL has been rebooted by Vince Mcmahon and people have mixed feelings about the reboot without a single game being played. The thing that most critics are pointed out is the fact that original XFL failed after it’s one and only season. It doesn’t help that the AAF also failed and did not make it through its inaugural season. So what’s different about the XFL this time around? For starters, the new XFL has better T.V deals on major networks such as ESPN, ABC, FOX, and FS1. The first go around had NBC but a lot of the games were played on channels like TNN and UPN. ESPN did not take the old XFL seriously and often mocked the lack of big names in the league. I can’t imagine that ESPN will be poking fun at the product now since the XFL will be covered by ESPN. There is a saying that perception is a reality. If ESPN is making the XFL sound important than people are likely to see it as such.
Vince Mcmahon has more money this time around and is dedicating more time to the XFL. Rumors are swirling around pro-wrestling sites that Vince Mcmahon will be stepping playing a lesser role in WWE to focus more on the XFL. The AAF experiment may actually benefit the XFL because even though it failed, it also was able to draw nice fan base, proving that spring league football is something that can be quite popular in the U.S. The AAF had decent ratings and did not fail because lack of fan support but it was bad business decisions. The XFL does not seem to be making the same mistakes that the AAF has made. The original XFL was more like a gimmick than it was a pro-football league, that will not be the case this time around. Also, the original XFL did not have social media platforms to advertise the games. One thing we saw with the AAF was the use of social media was very important and it often trended at the top of twitters rankings. I believe the XFL will capitalize on the opportunity to draw in passionate football fans and the people are just sick of the NFL. |
